The government has also refused to underwrite protection for those at the coal-face who will be injecting the new, virtually untested and unproven pandemic vaccine to millions of Australians despite its insistence that the shots be rolled out by the end of September or early October - only weeks away.

Professor Jim Bishop, the Federal Government's Chief Medical Officer, was quoted this morning on ABC Newsradio as stating that it was "...unfair and inappropriate to raise safety concerns because it looks as if it's [the H1N1 shot] going to be a very good vaccine.

"Since it is the Federal Government's responsibility to ensure the safety of all medications which are licensed here - especially those which will be administered so widely - one would have thought that the Government's own spokesperson would be the last person to call safety concerns unfair or inappropriate." says Meryl Dorey, President of the Australian Vaccination Network.

The UK government was recently caught out after a letter they had sent in secret to more than 600 top neurologists warning of a potential increased risk of the killer nerve disease, Guillian-Barre (GBS) paralysis, following the use of the H1N1 vaccine was leaked to the media. (2) GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

"The UK Government showed that it was aware of this problem yet it did not warn the British public just as the Australian Government is not issuing any warnings to our population about known potential issues from this rushed vaccination campaign." Ms Dorey stated.

"In 1976, the US initiated a swine flu vaccination campaign with an untested vaccine. More than 4,000 people were seriously injured with 25 vaccine-associated deaths being reported. The campaign was called off after only 10 weeks because of the high incidence of reactions and in the end, there was only 1 death from the disease itself - the vaccine proved to be more dangerous than the swine flu. I don't think we want to see history repeating itself either here in Australia or overseas."

The Australian Vaccination Network is calling for full, open and transparent disclosure of the ingredients, study results and side effects of this new vaccine well before it is used on the Australian people. We demand that the government not dismiss known and valid concerns about safety and efficacy but rather, that it take its role seriously as the protector of the Australian people and ensure that any vaccines which are used are shown to be fully safe and effective prior to a license being issued for their distribution. Anything less then that would be irresponsible and would leave them open to the same criticisms aimed at the US government which ended up paying over $3.5 billion in compensation to the victims of the 1976 swine flu vaccination campaign.
