Excerpt from Changing Habits Newsletter - December 2008

When I wrote my book Changing Habits Changing Lives back in 1998, I researched all I could on genetically modified foods. Ten years ago the technology was frightening. Last year I updated my book and did some more research on the subject and updated the info in the 2007 edition.

Recently I purchased a book called Seeds of Deception by Jeffrey M Smith, The book is an explosive expose revealing how industry manipulation and political collusion - not sound science, allow dangerous genetically engineered food into the daily diet.

seeds_of_deception It reads like a thriller with all the cover ups, bribing and gag orders revealed throughout the last ten years. I was reading the book and then a couple of weeks ago I was asked to dinner by an amazing lady and wonderful cook by the name of Mary McCarthy, down in Portsea Victoria. Mary said she had a CD on genetically modified foods that she thought I might like it. It just happened to be a lecture given by Jeffrey Smith late last year.
After reading his book and listening to his CD I wanted more so I went to his website and was stunned by the information he was shedding light on regarding the deception of genetically modified foods. I think the one thing that really upset me was that I have always watched the companies that do use or do not use genetically modified foods. I try not to buy food with the five genetically modified foods allowed in Australia; soy, canola, corn, sugar beet, cotton seed and potatoes but what I didn't realise was that many additives made from these foods are throughout our food supply. I knew of a few but I didn't realise how extensive the list was (see list following of additives that may be GM).

It is very hard to briefly tell you the adverse affects of genetically modified foods, if you want to know more then I suggest you buy the book or go to the following website www.seedsofdeception.com, but to the best of my capacity in this brief newsletter this is what I know from some of the research, remember this is just a snippet.

In 1995 Arpad Pusztai and his wife Susan both distinguished senior scientists were awarded a 1.6 million pound research grant by the Scottish Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Department. They were chosen to create a model for testing genetically modified foods, verifying that they were safe to eat. Their testing methods were to become the standard used in Britain and likely adopted throughout the European Union. But what Pusztai found was the exact opposite!

He found the GM foods were not safe for human consumption.

He began his testing with GM potatoes and he found that not only were the potatoes less in protein and nutritional content, but when he fed them to the rats, the rats suffered damaged immune systems, their white blood cells responded more sluggishly, they had smaller less developed brains, liver and testicles. Some rats had enlarged pancreases and intestines and partial atrophy of the liver, there was proliferation of cells in the stomach and intestines which signalled an increased potential for cancer. What is startling is that the rats exhibited these symptoms after only ten days of consuming the GM potatoes and the affects lasted 110 days after they stopped eating the GM potatoes. Of course Pusztai decided to go public with his findings and was immediately dismissed from his position and a gag order was placed on him.

Many scientists believe that the increase in allergies, autism, asperges and other diseases which have increased in an epidemic proportion is due to the genetic modification of foods and medicines that are now being consumed. The increase in these diseases has been over the last 10 - 15 years since the introduction of GM foods.

If you decide that you do not want to eat GM foods, then I suggest you re read the chapter on Genetically modified foods - Frankenstein Foods in my book Changing Habits Changing Lives and in addition, copy and paste the list below and keep it handy in your wallet so that you can be a conscious consumer and not be part of this giant experiment on humans.
