The History
In late 2006 a group of Inverell and
district individuals had a vision to create a biological co-operative to
provide high quality organic and biodynamic products to the community at a
reasonable cost, while at the same time nurturing and supporting local
producers and manufacturers into becoming our main suppliers.
A meeting was held at Gum Flat hall
in March 2007 to gauge the community interest in this venture. The response was
positive and a steering committee was formed.
The Vision
The Co-op distributes organic and biodynamic
produce and products to members and the public each fortnight, and supports the outlet of other
Co-op Approved* products ranging
from personal care products, through to clothes and energy saving technologies.
Each divvy up day the Co-op becomes a
hub of activity with members picking up their pre-ordered produce, as well as the distribution of items to both members and the public. Divvy up runs from 8.30am - 11.30am on Saturday mornings. Pick ups are welcomed from 10am onwards.
The Co-op sells its fresh produce at
fair and transparent prices with the aim of matching conventional produce
prices whenever possible, and it buys fresh produce from local suppliers
whenever possible at close to retail prices. All other produce is brought in
from external organic wholesalers.
Education plays a pivotal role in all
the Co-op's activities to help foster a deeper understanding of nature, linking
consumers with suppliers, and supporting ongoing member networking. To this end
the Co-op sponsors a wide variety of events ranging from talks, seminars,
workshops and meetings, through to conferences and festivals.
With the diversity of skills held
within the Co-op membership, the ready availability of a wide range of biological
inputs, and information continually being generated through the Co-op's
educational events - local growers and enterprises are encouraged, nurtured and
supported to become biological suppliers to the Co-op.
The Co-op freely offers assistance to
other similar co-op projects in other townships, helping to extend the network
and expand the potential market for our local suppliers and enterprises.
Over time the Co-op will continue to
build up its ‘green' credentials by incrementally installing green energy
options and waste management practices. Ultimately the Co-op aims to build its
own self-sufficient purpose-specific premises and influence the wider community
to follow suit.
As the Co-op matures, many new
projects will be supported such as establishing a whole-food café, setting up a
commercial kitchen, converting an old flour mill into an organic value-adding
grain enterprise etc...
The sky is the limit!
